PETALING JAYA: Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne's show is definitely on.
Despite protests and an attempt to call for the singer to be banned from performing in Malaysia by PAS Youth earlier this month, organiser Galaxy Group said yesterday the show would go on.
“Everything is moving very positively. We have spoken to the authorities involved and things look good,” a spokesman for the organiser told The Star.
He said the concert here would meet local rules and regulations.
“We've organised the show according to the rules. There is nothing wrong. We've received positive and assuring feedback from the authorities,” he said.
Earlier, the Federal Territory PAS Youth chief Kamaruzaman Mohamed had called for Avril’s concert to be banned on grounds that “rock and punk are not suitable for the young generation, especially so during the Merdeka month.”
The wing came under fire after it attempted to call for the ban which many sectors called ridiculous and narrow-minded.
Some of those who lashed out at PAS Youth included activist groups, local veteran artistes, Commercial Radio Malaysia (an association of local radio stations), Recording Industry Association of Malaysia, Malaysian Artistes Association and Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.
“Avril Lavigne The Best Damn Tour - Live In Malaysia” will be held on Aug 29 at Stadium Merdeka at 8pm. For details, contact 03-7711 5000.
Celebrity Sports Showdown announced for Nintendo Wii
Developed by the guys and gals behind the disappointing EA Playground, Celebrity Sports Showdown hopes to go satisfy the world’s obsession with celebrity by letting you play through 12 virtual outdoor sports as some of your favourite stars, from Avril Lavigne and Fergie, to Paul Pierce and Mia Hamm.
“We feel that this game is the EA SPORTS Freestyle answer to a great Wii party game. It explores the lighter side of sports and pulls inspiration from the entertainment spectacles that are so prevalent in pop culture today,” said Dave McCarthy, Executive Producer. “Celebrity Sports Showdown will bring people to the party with a collection of games and celebrities that appeal to everyone.”
Celebrities featured listed below:
* Fergie * Avril Lavigne * LeAnn Rimes * Keith Urban * Nelly Furtado * Paul Pierce * Mia Hamm * Kristi Yamaguchi * Reggie Bush * Sugar Ray Leonard
It was the best damn part of the concert, and it happened at the very end. For her encore, Avril Lavigne brought a special guest on stage — her husband, Deryck Whibley.
“Well, well, well. Ladies and gentlemen, I came here tonight to perform the Canadian national anthem,” said the Sum 41 singer before breaking into his group’s hit song, In Too Deep.
Wearing skinny black jeans, Whibley rocked out on his guitar while his wife danced around and sang the chorus for the more than 6,000 at the Halifax Metro Centre last night.
The performance was part of Lavigne’s Best Damn Tour, which has seen the 23-year-old travel around the world to support her third studio album, The Best Damn Thing.
“Are you guys ready to have a good time with us tonight? Let me hear you say hell ya,” the heavily mascara-eyed singer said before breaking into her song, I Can Do Better.
Maybe it was because of the length of this tour — she’s spent a year and a half promoting this album — or just technical difficulties, but the show could have been better.
Lavigne’s voice sounded pitchy and rough during some numbers, while during others she delivered the vocal goods — sometimes it was both in the same song.
There were musical lulls as Lavigne left the stage and then reappeared, and as instruments were being changed. A piano was rolled out when Lavigne performed When You're Gone, and later in the concert a drum kit was brought out for her to play.
All this didn’t seem to matter to most of her audience, largely made up of glow stick waving teens, tweens and their parents. Their Lavigne love-in happened before she was even on the stage. Many bounced in their seats in a sugar rush of excitement.
Opening for Lavigne last night was Mississauga’s illScarlet. The Juno nominated band offered one of the more surreal moments of the evening. As it sang Mary Jane — about marijuana use — the young audience lit up their glow sticks and waved to the music.
Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian opposition Islamic party Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) has demanded that the government ban pop superstar Avril Lavigne from performing in the country.
It said her concert would be an insult to the Merdeka freedom fighters.
Kuala Lumpur PAS Youth chief Kamaruzaman Mohamad said the government should instead hold patriotic and civilised concerts as well as organise history-writing contests and historical exhibitions in conjunction with the 51st anniversary of the country's independence, reported The Malaysian Insider.
The Canadian pop singer was scheduled to perform at the Stadium Merdeka on Aug 29, just two days ahead of Malaysia's Independence Day, as part of her world tour.
Mr Kamaruzaman led his exco members in handing over a protest note to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Abdul Hakim Borhan and a Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry official here on Friday.
The protest note also demanded that the Central Committee for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artists (Puspal) not issue the permit for the concert.
Last month, the same PAS group had also protested against Indonesian dangdut sensation Inul Daratista performing in Kuala Lumpur, saying her concert would have been too erotic and almost pornographic, as well as capable of corrupting the minds of young Malaysians. Inul's concert was subsequently cancelled.
The group's objection to Lavigne's concert is that 'the rock and punk elements portrayed by this artiste are not suitable to be shown to the young generation', Mr Kamaruzaman was quoted as saying by PAS-owned Harakah Daily.
Avril Lavigne has decided to extend her tour of China with another six performances.
Lavigne’s Best Damn Tour 2008 is currently in Canada but will soon take off on an Asian circuit, traveling through Malaysia, South Korea, the Philippines and Japan, before stopping in China.
The Canadian singer visited China briefly in 2007 where she performed at the Qizhong Tennis Center in Shanghai and then in Hong Kong.
Lavigne is currently promoting her third album, “The Best Damn Thing,” which sold over 5 million copies. She was ranked at No. 7 in the Forbes “Top 20 Earners Under 25” in December of 2007 and has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

UNLESS you have switched off your phone, cancelled the newspaper, and unplugged the TV and radio, you will definitely know that Avril Lavigne's The Best Damn Tour will kick off at 8pm in Stadium Merdeka, Kuala lumpur on August 29.
The singer has been touring the US and her native Canada since July 25. she plans to visit the Far east, starting with us, and then moving on to Seoul, Manila, Taipei, and finally 11 concerts in Japan.
Although she's described as a punk/rock singer, strangely enough Avril started her singing career in church. Her mother heard her sing along to hymns when she was just two and was surprised at how good Avril's renditions were.
When Avril was 14, she confirmed her mum's thoughts by winning a competition that put her on stage next to another Canadian singer, Shania Twain. Avril's performance was good enough to earn her more work as well as a professional manager. Her career has been skyrocketing ever since.
Her first album Let Go which was released in 2002, sold over 16 million copies. Its huge success led to her being named Best New Artist at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. Since then she has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, and had six international no. 1 songs - an effort that netted her an income of some US$12 million (RM39 million) a year and made Forbes magazine rank her no. 7 in their Top 20 Earners Under 25 list last December.
Avril is also making a bomb from releasing her music online. Her single Girlfriend which was released on Feb 7 last year, reportedly became YouTube's most popular video of all time on July 18 when it received over 92,600,000 views. However, controversy set in when accusations of download rigging began to fly.
Now the dust has apparently settled as it was reported recently that the singer has already earned US$1 million from YouTube fees. Not bad for someone who will only be 24 on Sept 27!

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Imagine, if you will, you are locked in a room. A room that seems open, yet enclosed at the same time. It is a familiar place. Imagine this room is filled with 20,000 teenage girls, and you are in the middle of them.
Now imagine, dear reader, every single girl starts screaming ... at the top of her lungs ... at the same time ... for four hours straight.
You have just entered ... a Jonas Brothers concert.
Yikes! It wasn't a dream. It wasn't "The Twilight Zone." It was Saturday night at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. And I still can't hear a thing.
A quarter century of attending concerts had not prepared me for this. The screaming was, to say the least, unbearable.
And it started before anyone even took the stage. Text messages and videos flashed on a screen elicited shouts at regular intervals.
Not even a brief downpour could quell the noise. These girls were raring to go.
When Demi Lovato took the stage, the shouting was in full force. So much so, Lovato seemed to be shouting as well. It was difficult to hear the latest Disney star as she performed. She was also having a difficult time navigating the extended catwalk stage at SPAC, but it didn't break her stride too much.
She managed to sing "That's How You Know," "La La Land" and "Get Back," among others. But she was straining to do it. Her emotional "Forget" had her sitting front and center, looking as if she were about to cry. It was her strongest song of the 30-minute set.
A quick break (and more screaming at nothing) set the stage for Avril Lavigne. The "veteran" of the night looked like a Libby Lu explosion, complete with sparkly makeup and matching sparkly microphones, mic stands and guitars.
She rolled through her tough-girl set of songs, such as "Girlfriend," "Do Better," "I Always Get What I Want" and "He Wasn't." The occasional feedback just added to the noise level. I doubt the crowd noticed. They just yelled louder.
When Lavigne, who almost sounded like she was singing over tracks at some points, sang her huge hits "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi," the crowd chimed in.
As she exited the stage, the fans got more riled up in anticipation of the big event. "Scream if you want the stage crew to hurry up" was one text message that drove them wild as they waited.
Finally, the time had come. Nick, Kevin and Joe made their way to the stage as Queen's "We Will Rock You" faded. The screaming at this point was deafening.
Ear-splitting, brain-rattling noise levels aside, it was a quite a production. Pyrotechnics, explosions, blinding lights and a complex stage set of multiple risers, ramps and stairs made this more of a theatrical event.
And, in all honesty, it was a good performance. Of course, if I say anything negative, I suppose I would risk bodily harm at the hands of random teenage girls. But it was hard to find a negative.
From their elaborate entrance to the full back-up band, including a strings section, everything went off without a hitch. And, unlike many "manufactured" pop stars, these boys really seem to have talent. Nick is especially gifted. In addition to vocals, he played drums, guitar and piano.
They performed a 21-song set, including the "Camp Rock" combo of "Gotta Find You" and "This is Me," with Lovato back on stage. It was almost as if they sang every song they have, including "That's Just the Way We Roll," "BB Good," "Goodnight and Goodbye," "Year 3000," "Play My Music," "Hello Beautiful" and "Burnin' Up." The fans knew every word of every song.
All the while, the trio ran, flipped and kicked their way up, down and around the stage. At one point, when Joe stripped off his jacket to reveal a muscle shirt underneath, I was fully expecting girls to start passing out.
There were a couple of stand-out moments during the night. One was when a little girl from the audience was pulled up on stage to sing with them. Her face was priceless. Another came when Nick, who is passionate about his battle with diabetes, performed "A Little Bit Longer." The touching and poignant message was perhaps lost on the fans, but it was an emotional moment nevertheless.
They wrapped the night with a two-song encore of "When You Look Me in the Eyes" and "S.O.S." After a few bows, the boys quickly exited the stage and the screams finally died down as the weary crowd filed out of SPAC.
I guess every generation has its "boy band." This show was reminiscent of girls screaming, crying and passing out at The Beatles and Elvis. Even New Kids on the Block and *NSYNC had similar responses in their day.
And parents, beware, the Jonas Brothers are not going away anytime soon. Their new CD hits stores Aug. 12. Maybe my hearing will return by then.
